Earrings

These earrings, quite simply, are inspired by Paris. I have always been inspired by the organic Art Nouveau movement. The beautifully expressive curves of this movement can be found in everything from subway terminals to door gates to lampposts in Paris. It’s as though nature has pushed up through the surface of the concrete and bricks and shaped the city itself.
The colour? Well, to be ‘in the pink’ means to be at the very height or pinnacle. Paris has been known to be the very ‘pink of fashion’ for hundreds of years. To ‘see the world through rose coloured glasses’ means to see the very best of a situation, often dreamily optimistic. I think I heard in a movie that accordion musicians play the song ‘Rose Coloured Glasses’ on Paris street corners to bring a smile to the visiting tourists…

Hale-Bopp appeared during my last year of high school. On a bright cold night, as I was waiting in my parents’ warm, faithful, ’86 butter-yellow Volvo in the school parking lot, I heard ‘Graceful Ghost Rag’ on CBC Radio 2. I looked up through the tall evergreen trees and she was quietly ghosting through the blue-black sky. These earrings are an ode to that 5-minute perfect memory. The delicate crystal at the bottom of each strand has been carefully wrapped with sterling silver to give added sparkle and movement. Sterling Silver and Crystal, 2 5/8 inches long

The luminous moon. Radiant and alluring, mysterious and changeable, a mythical wonder of the night sky. What better symbol of femininity? Even when I was little, I knew the moon called to the mysterious in me. Did you know that the most prized of gemstones for millenia was pearls? It’s only been in the last century that these natural wonders have been cultured.
There’s a famous story that Cleopatra, wanting to demonstrate Egypt’s power to Rome, bet Mark Antony that she could host the most extravagant dinner in the world. Mark Antony accepted the challenge and Cleopatra was presented with a goblet of wine. She took one of her perfect pearl earrings, crushed it to dust and mixed it with her wine. She then drank the mixture. She took the second earring, similarly destroyed it, and offered it to Mark Antony. Stunned, he declined and acknowledged that Cleopatra had won the bet.
Even the Bible describes pearls as the most valuable of gemstones in this metaphor for seeking God:

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. – Matthew 13:45-46

In 17th century Holland, pearls were presented to women by their betrothed as wedding presents and were a symbol of purity and worth.
